What a great day we had at "Sweet Shopping Saturday"!

Of course....my camera battery died so I have no pictures to share.....:(

It was C.O.L.D. but that didn't stop any of our ladies from coming out and having a wonderful day!

All the Elkhorn shops reported a wonderful day! I think I can speak for all of us "shop keepers"...we LOVE meeting all of you...seeing many of our ol' friends and sharing the love of our little destination spot!

I'm going to let you in on a little secret....the excitement is just beginning!!

I am always amazed at how fast time flies....I am approaching the end of my 1st year in Elkhorn! What a great journey it has been!

Dr. Paul H. Winkler “Wink”

Dr. Paul H. Winkler, 88, died Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at Brookestone Meadows in Omaha, NE. He was born to Frank and Maude Freer Winkler on August 30th, 1923 in Heron Lake Minnesota. He graduated from Heron Lake High School. During World War II, Paul served with the Army of the United States from 1943 - 1946 and received numerous decorations and citations. He married Maxine Mathias on June 17, 1947. He graduated in 1952 from The California College of Chiropody (Podiatry) and moved to Hastings. He lived there for 59 years where he practiced podiatry before retiring. He served as the Past President of the Nebraska Podiatry Association.

Paul was a past Exhaulted Ruler of Elks Lodge #159 and a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Paul excelled at whatever he attempted. He was a champion golfer, hand-ball player & tennis player, fisherman and bowler. He played basketball during podiatry school, even playing against the Harlem Globetrotters. Paul was a former pilot and continued to share his joy of aviation thru his love of model airplanes. He was a master carpenter and extremely talented artist and loved a good game of cards.

Survivors are two daughters, Michele Minnick and Catherine Bassett, both of Omaha; one son, Jeffrey of Lakeville, Minn; one brother, Bob of Woodberry, Minn; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Maxine, infant daughter, two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 27th at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Hastings. Burial at Sunset Memorial will follow at 2:00 p.m.

Memorials may be given to The Knights of Columbus #1123, PO Box 632, Hastings NE 68901 or Catholic Social Services, 333 West 2nd Street, Hastings NE 68901.

Many of you know how amazing the past 6 months have been at The Garden Gallery. Some of you know that my family has also been in the process of moving my dad to Omaha.

As I'm sure some of you have experienced, this transition is one of many highs and lows. I want to thank all of you that have given encouraging words, helpful insights, and amazing support.

As I spent the morning with dad and he had lunch with me at the greenhouse, lots of memories joined me. And I thought...."Birds weren't always singing, but something was always chirping!!!" Take a peek below at some of the amazing artwork created by my dad when he was well into his 80's....

Not only is my dad a talented painter, some of the work I most cherish is the jewelry he made while silversmithing. I now have his tools and am looking forward to when he can teach me some of his tricks.

Tomorrow....I think I will paint.

Back by popular demand.....

"Mosaic Madness"

Want to learn how to do a little mosaic project???? Of course you do!!!
In this 2 part class, you will make a basic mosaic project.

A one-of-a-kind creation perfect for displaying magnificent mums this fall or colorful annuals next spring will be your reward for being a good student!
I will have on hand a variety of tile and other trinkets for you to choose from. Sizes, shapes, colors etc etc....all will vary depending on what I have available and what your choice happens to be...but, I know you will LOVE your creation no matter what!!! :)

Cost of this 2 part class is only $38.00.

Here are the class times:
Session #1:
August 24th 6:00 p.m.
August 25th 6:00 p.m.

Session #2
August 27th 10:30 a.m.
August 28th 12:00 noon

Fallin.....

I am totally fallin' for all this fabulous fall art that the artists are bring to the greenhouse!!!

My fabulous fellow artist Mary Anne, came out today and we have moved up! By that, I mean we expanded the art displays and they now encompass my wonderful 2nd floor landing! Art and fall perennials are transforming this greenhouse from "springy spring" into "fabulous fall"!

I just visited with my growers, and the mums and asters will not be ready for at least 2 weeks....I know, I know...kids back to school, the locust singing, temperatures not in the 90's....make us all a little antsy for the new season. But...Mother Nature is in charge!

Meanwhile, enjoy the pictures of the new fall feeling!

Whenever we make one of our trips to the mountains, I feel very centered. Family. Nature. Simplicity. Thanks for allowing me a little time to re-connect......Hope you get a feel for my love of the mountains...thought I'd share a few of the moments.....enjoy the pictures!

Yea, yea....corny but true. This group of women was so crazy creative!!! Time flew and they all went home with masterpieces!!!

Dorothy Rosenbaum!!!

Here's what Dorothy has to say about herself!

Mostly self-taught, my goal is to create something that I will enjoy and get excited about. The work has to stand on its own. I like my paintings to tell it like it is.

Born and raised in Eastern Nebraska, I've always loved nature and the outdoors. Wild Life Artist, Robert Bateman has been a big inspiration.

During my college years I took as many Art courses as allowed. After earning a B.A. from the University of Omaha and my M.A. from the University of Nebraska I taught. When I retired from teaching, I started painting seriously. Needing to reacquaint myself with different media...I enrolled in workshops with Artists Bill Alexander and Charles Rogers, Colo., Dean Davis, Ohio, Rose Edin, Minn., Zoltan Sabo and Sue Crawford Ariz., to name a few.

I have participated in numerous exhibits and have been honored with winning several awards. My mind is always full of possibilities for a painting. I paint what I know. "Good Art always shines."

My paintings are decorating walls here in the U.S. as well as Canada, Scotland, Mexico and Japan.

Dorothy and her husband just celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary!!!

Dorothy wouldn't let me take a picture of her....close your eyes and imagine beauty....that's Dorothy!

You all know how I love to wear hats at the greenhouse. Well, Dorothy is busy keeping me stocked with her fabulous creations! AND....TAA DAA!!!! That is what Dorothy is giving away as our featured artist!!!

Monday, June 20^th:

Ages 10+

Painting a mural and making record bowls!

The kids will be painting a mural on a wall in the basement with different acrylic paints. They will learn about the different mediums and styles of murals artists use. They will also melt old records in the oven and make bowls to bring home!

Monday, June 27^th:

All ages

Painted terra cotta pots!

We will be painting and decorating terra cotta pots. The kids will be able to choose their own flower to plant in their pot and bring home!

Wednesday, July 6^th:

Ages 5-10

Miniature plant terrariums!

The kids will choose from a variety of fun jars to put little plants and miniature decorations in. They can choose a fairy theme, or fun random miniature items!

Monday, July 11^th:

All ages

Watercolor landscapes!

We will learn the basics about watercolor and landscapes. They will create their own landscape on watercolor paper to bring home!

Monday, July 18^th:

All ages

Self-portraits

The kids will learn about the different types of self-portraits. We will create a variety of self-portraits including graphite profiles and full-body outlining portraits.

Classes run from 4 pm-6 pm Mondays, except the week of July 4^th. It is $15 per class or $60 for all four (per age group). They will be able to bring home all their projects, except the mural we will e-mail pictures. Snacks and drinks will be provided each class.

These fun classes will give your child an introduction to art or expand on what they already know! The projects are great and entertaining for everyone. It incorporates lots of different styles and techniques they’ll be able to learn and just have fun with!

What a wonderful life.....

This week I have:

*Spent time with my dad.

*Had a fantastically fun dinner with Dick, Cathy, Anna, Josh and Ben.

*Registered Ben for the Junior Olympics.

*Had wonderful conversations with friends.

*Created some fabulous things for the greenhouse.

*Had beautiful morning runs with Summit and Lucy.

*Participated in exciting meetings for the growth of Elkhorn.

***Thought about how lucky I am to do what I love...I have met so many amazing people and am truly blessed to have such genuine artists that offer to help without even thinking twice. MaryAnne and Sherrie , Katie (along with her terrific hubby), Dick and I began setting up for the Munroe Myer Garden Walk this afternoon. It looks to be an amazing day tomorrow! A big thanks to Gary for manning the flowers tomorrow and to Anna and Josh for once again running the "shop"! Here is a "peek" at some of the new goodies!

What fun we had!!!! A couple of margaritas, fabulous dip and much laughter! Mix that all together and some fabulous containers were created!

Here is the recipe for the dip we devoured yesterday! Enjoy!!!
SOUTHWESTERN BEAN DIP
1 can Mild Rotel, 1 can White Shoepeg Corn, 1 can Black Beans (rinsed and drained), 1 small can Chopped Black Olives, 1 chopped Red Pepper, 1/2 tsp Cumin, 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder, 1/4 C Red Wine Vinegar....mix and serve!!!

I am so lucky to have such great people helping me at the greenhouse! I was able to take a break Friday and Saturday to spend time with my family and watch Ben RUN, RUN, RUN at the State Track Meet! He has medaled both years so far....can't wait to see what his Senior Year brings!
So proud....just thought I'd share a little mother's pride!!!
